Katy wright

Katy grew up in Wales where she began learning the cello at the age of thirteen. Here she had great success and was a grand prize winning finalist of the Texaco Young Musician of Wales. She performed on HTV Wales and Channel 4 television broadcasts and BBC Radio Wales as a soloist. She was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in 1999 to study with David Strange and Josephine Knight

Whilst at the Academy, Katy performed in a number of Masterclasses with world renowned cellists including Zara Nelsova, Colin Carr and Robert Cohen and played in numerous orchestral concerts with conductors such as Sir Colin Davies and Lutz Kohler. She also went on an exchange to the Hochshule fur Musik und Theater in Leipzig, Germany where she studied with Christian Giger, Principal Cello of the Gewendhaus Orchestra.

Katy has just graduated from the Academy with a distinction in her Postgraduate Diploma. She was also awarded a prize for an outstanding final recital. Katy is currently freelancing in London where she combines orchestral work with chamber music performance with the Dorrelian Quartet and the Legeia Piano Trio. She recently returned from a UK and American tour with Sir Elton John and has appeared on Top of the Pops with artists such as Daniel Bedingfield and Katie Melua. Katy has also been working with the Royal National Scottish Orchestra after having recently won a trial with the ensemble.
